VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Tragically, two police officers in Virginia lost their lives during a traffic stop late Friday night, according to officials.

At a press briefing on Saturday, Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate announced that Officers Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reece were fatally shot after pulling over a vehicle due to expired registration plates. The suspect, identified as John McCoy III, 42, became confrontational when ordered to exit the vehicle. After he finally exited, McCoy drew a handgun and opened fire on both officers, striking them several times, as per Neudigate’s report.

Chief Neudigate stated that the tragic incident was recorded on the officers’ body cams, which he described as “disturbing.”

“Officers Girvin and Reece were devoted law enforcement professionals and exemplary public servants,” Neudigate emphasized. “They had outstanding reputations within our department, and their commitment to duty was unquestionable. We entrusted them with the responsibility of protecting our community from dangerous elements, and last night, tragedy struck. Their sacrifice serves as a stark reminder of the risks that our officers confront every day.”

The chief further disclosed that McCoy was later located inside a shed with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Authorities believe it was a result of the unfolding events. McCoy, who had a felony conviction dating back to 2009, could face additional charges related to his possession of a firearm at the time of the incident. Details on the prior conviction were not disclosed.

The police department is requesting the community’s patience as they navigate this investigation and mourn their fallen officers.
