On Monday, a tragic accident in Guatemala City resulted in the loss of at least 53 lives when a bus crossing a bridge collided with multiple vehicles and fell into a ravine, as reported by local authorities.
The bus ended up in a difficult-to-access area and was submerged in sewage water. Scattered belongings and luggage were visible along the riverbank, indicating the chaos that ensued.
Officials believe the death toll may rise, as the investigation into the crash is ongoing. The public prosecutor’s office confirmed the incident, which took place around 4:30 a.m., and is currently conducting inquiries.
According to Carlos Hernández, a representative from the fire department, it’s possible that a mechanical failure caused the bus driver to lose control, leading to a collision with two other vehicles.
Hernández emphasized that the inquiry is still in progress. Local news outlets shared security footage showing the bus traveling at a high speed moments before the crash, which has sent shockwaves throughout the capital and sparked a desperate search for information among residents.
