The Minnesota Timberwolves are strengthening their roster as they approach the critical final stretch of the season. They have officially promoted two-way guard Jaylen Clark to a standard contract and are also set to acquire notable free agent guard Bones Hyland.
The Timberwolves have reached an agreement for a fully guaranteed, two-year contract with Clark, the 6-foot-4 swingman who has been displaying remarkable energy over the past month, as confirmed by his agent Todd Ramasar of Life Sports Agency to ESPN.
Following Clark’s promotion on Thursday, the Timberwolves are poised to sign Hyland, a first-round pick from 2021, to a two-way contract. This move marks a reunion with Timberwolves president Tim Connelly, who originally drafted Hyland 26th overall while with the Denver Nuggets, where he became a two-time Rising Star selection.
Clark became a regular in the Timberwolves’ rotation starting January 29, averaging 6.9 points and 1.7 rebounds over 11 games in February, with an impressive shooting percentage of 47.4% from the field and 44% from beyond the arc. He has achieved double-digit scoring in three games, recording 17, 14, and 11 points.
Defensively, Clark has limited opponents to 41% shooting when contesting shots this season, according to ESPN Research. He notably took on the challenging assignment of guarding Shai Gilgeous-Alexander throughout 70 matchups this month.
As a second-round pick in 2023, Clark missed the entire 2023-24 season due to a torn Achilles tendon but has made a remarkable comeback this year.
Hyland, 24, is currently in his fourth NBA season and has averaged 7.2 points while shooting a career-high 39% from three-point range in 11.1 minutes per game across 20 appearances with the LA Clippers this season. He was traded to the Atlanta Hawks as part of the Terance Mann and Bogdan Bogdanovic trade at the deadline, but was waived shortly after.
According to ESPN Research, Hyland is among the top five in steals per 36 minutes this season among players with over 200 minutes played and has averaged an impressive 17.7 points in games where he has spent at least 20 minutes on the court.
Before joining the Clippers in February 2023, Hyland spent nearly two seasons with the Nuggets.
