Chinese game developers Eclipse Glow Games have announced their new title, *Tides Of Annihilation*, a fantasy hack-and-slash adventure set in a modern, yet artfully reimagined Arthurian London. Players will step into the role of Gwendolyn, a youthful and fierce blood-letter, tasked with vanquishing the demi-gods of Avalon by, quite uniquely, hurling the Knights of the Round Table against them.
My interest in this game stems from its intriguing portrayal of London through a Chinese lens, featuring iconic elements such as the overturned Millennium Wheel and vibrant red phone booths. As someone who appreciates seeing the nuances of my own culture interpreted by international artists, I’m looking forward to this fresh perspective. However, I’ve got a few suggestions for Eclipse Glow. For one, the River Thames appears excessively pristine, even with terrifying fish demons lurking below, and I can’t help but feel there should be more flyers for adult shops tucked within those phone booths.
The announcement trailer also showcases entertaining moments where formidable bosses speak of “doomed fates” before launching into a dramatic martial arts routine, reminiscent of a system crash. These flamboyant adversaries would be a thrill to encounter, as the game features over 30 of them, including a hefty character with floating dreadlocks and a woman who seems to possess Gilgamesh’s iconic Gate Of Babylon skill from *Fate/Stay Night*. Gwendolyn is well-equipped with an array of combat moves, juggles, stealthy dodges, and the ability to summon spectral knights for brutal attacks or fiery devastation.
The press release draws comparisons to popular titles like *Devil May Cry*, *Stellar Blade*, and *Nier Automata*. They could have even added *Final Fantasy 16* into the mix, as the knight-summoning mechanics bear a striking resemblance to its Eikons. Additionally, the game features towering armored titans that serve as “dynamic, interconnected vertical challenges,” evoking memories of *God Of War 3* and *Shadow Of The Colossus*.
The developers, funded by Tencent and comprised of former Sega and Ubisoft talents, estimate that players will require at least 30 hours to complete the game. However, one aspect that I find less appealing at this stage is Gwendolyn’s voice acting; it feels somewhat underwhelming. But not everyone can embody the charisma of Cate Blanchett’s renowned portrayal of Galadriel. For more information on *Tides Of Annihilation*, you can check out its page on Steam (though it is not currently live). A release date has yet to be announced.
