Syria’s Interim President Advocates for National Unity at Key Conference
On Tuesday, Syria’s interim president emphasized the importance of unity and the reconstruction of the country during a significant two-day conference focused on moving forward after years of authoritarian rule. The event, designed to foster a collective path for Syria’s diverse populace, took place in the capital city, Damascus, on Monday and Tuesday, drawing hundreds of participants from various religious and ethnic backgrounds. Notably, the Kurdish-led militia, which governs a substantial portion of northeastern Syria, was not invited to the dialogue.
In his address, President Ahmed al-Shara urged attendees to collaborate in healing the nation’s wounds and supporting its recovery, stating, "Syria calls on you to stand together in unity and cooperation to soothe its pain."
Understanding the National Dialogue
Arab and Western officials have urged the new leaders in Syria to create a government that genuinely represents all religious and ethnic communities before restoring full diplomatic relations. President al-Shara, who led a coalition that overthrew former dictator Bashar al-Assad in December, has pledged to facilitate a national dialogue aimed at establishing such an inclusive governance structure.
