Amazing footage has documented a jaw-dropping incident where a kayaker was briefly engulfed by a humpback whale in Chilean Patagonia, only to be unexpectedly regurgitated moments later.

Last Saturday, Adrian Simancas was enjoying a kayaking adventure in the Strait of Magellan near Bahía El Águila when the massive creature surfaced and swallowed both him and his bright yellow kayak. This astonishing moment was captured on video by his father, Dell, who was paddling behind him.

“I honestly believed I had been eaten alive,” Adrian remarked in an interview with the Associated Press.

“Yes, my initial thought was that I had perished,” he continued. “It was absolutely terrifying; I felt utterly powerless in that moment.”

Once he was expelled from the whale’s mouth, his father urged him to remain calm. However, a new wave of anxiety washed over him.

“When I resurfaced and started floating, I was immediately worried about my father’s safety as well, fearing that we might not reach the shore in time or that I could develop hypothermia,” Adrián expressed.

Video footage showed him swimming through the icy waters toward his father’s kayak, and together they managed to reach the shore safely.

Initially, Adrian feared that an orca had swallowed him, but upon his release, he speculated, “Perhaps the whale approached me out of curiosity or a desire to communicate.”

The Strait of Magellan, located 1,600 miles south of Santiago, Chile’s capital, attracts numerous adventure-seeking tourists every year.

Encounters between whales and humans are extremely rare; however, there has been an increase in incidents where whales collide with cargo vessels in recent years.
