Nearly four years have passed since Spotify revealed its plans for a HiFi tier that would provide lossless audio quality. According to Bloomberg, the long-awaited service might soon come to fruition this year as Spotify works on finalizing important details, including streaming rights.
The anticipated price for this new tier, likely to be called “Music Pro,” could add an extra $5 or $6 to the monthly subscription, as suggested by CEO Daniel Ek last year. Currently, Spotify’s Premium subscription starts at $11.99 per month, prior to any family or student discounts, following two price increases in recent years.
While competitors like Apple Music include lossless streaming in their basic pricing, Spotify appears to be setting itself apart by integrating additional features into Music Pro. These may include options for song remixing and exclusive concert ticket offerings with early access for subscribers.
Recently, Spotify secured a new multi-year licensing agreement with Warner Music Group, aiming to solidify future streaming rights and contribute to the evolution of audio-visual streaming, with HiFi likely being an integral part of that initiative. Additionally, the platform entered into a similar deal with Universal Music Group in late January, where UMG specifically hinted at the introduction of HiFi streaming and potential features for “superfan” services, including access to deluxe editions, early music releases, exclusive listening events, and artist Q&A sessions.
Although the rollout has taken longer than initially anticipated, it seems the leading music streaming platform is gearing up to elevate its audio quality with HiFi in 2025.
