Sony has not yet finalized its plans for a PS5 showcase this summer, opting instead to weigh the possibility of a more compact State of Play event.

Industry insider Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb has reported that Sony Interactive Entertainment is currently deliberating between hosting a larger showcase or a scaled-back State of Play, which usually highlights third-party titles and smaller news.

Grubb suggested, “If a showcase does occur, we can expect some exciting announcements, potentially setting the stage for 2026.”

According to his insights, there seems to be an internal discussion at Sony about whether to proceed with a full-scale showcase this summer or stick with another State of Play event. However, a showcase remains a strong option.

“A full showcase would suggest a substantial amount of content is on the horizon, including potential glimpses of Wolverine and various other games slated for release next year,” he added.

PlayStation last hosted a major showcase in 2023, where it revealed several titles for PS5 and PSVR2, such as Metal Gear Solid Delta and in-depth previews of Spider-Man 2 and Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Earlier this week, Sony held its latest State of Play presentation, primarily showcasing third-party games like Borderlands 4 and Split Fiction. The event concluded with the unexpected debut of Housemarque’s new game, Saros.

This week has been quite important for Sony, especially after it released its recent financial report, which indicated that the PS5 had its most successful holiday season in 2024, surpassing a total of 75 million units shipped.

In terms of sales, the PlayStation 5 is now only 1.5 million units shy of the PlayStation 4 within the same timeframe of its lifecycle, which saw a total of 76.5 million units sold.
