Dramatic video footage has surfaced of a devastating plane crash that occurred at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport on Monday. The clips depict a Delta Air Lines aircraft careening along the runway before flipping over, with one wing breaking off and flames consuming the tail section. The incident, which happened at Canada’s busiest airport, led to 21 individuals being taken to the hospital, three of whom are in critical condition.

In the aftermath of the crash, smartphone recordings revealed the chilling moments when passengers evacuated through the aircraft’s inverted doors to escape into the freezing weather. Fire retardant hung in the air as some passengers appeared bewildered in the snow, while others voiced their shock and panic amidst the confusion.

“Oh no, no, no, no, no,” one video recorder exclaimed as the plane’s fuselage rolled over.

Two critically injured adults were airlifted to a nearby trauma facility, while a child was transported by ambulance to a downtown Toronto hospital. In a social media update on Tuesday, Delta Air Lines confirmed that 19 individuals had been released from medical care following the incident.

Flight 4819, a Bombardier CRJ900 jet operated by Delta’s subsidiary Endeavor Air, was on approach to Toronto at approximately 2:45 PM local time after departing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, when it crashed.

Audio from air traffic control indicated the plane was “upside down and burning” shortly after landing, with passengers evacuating as thick black smoke billowed from the charred fuselage. The US Federal Aviation Authority reported that all 80 individuals onboard had successfully exited the aircraft.

Peter Carlson, a passenger on the flight, shared with the Toronto Star that the impact felt like “smashing into a wall” before the passengers were violently tossed sideways. Upon realizing he was unharmed, Carlson unbuckled his seatbelt and sent a message to his wife: “I love you, and I love our kids,” before assisting other passengers in evacuating the aircraft.

The precise cause of the crash remains unknown. However, Todd Aitken, the airport’s fire chief, stated, “It’s too early to speculate. What we can confirm is that the runway conditions were dry and there were no crosswinds.”

This incident occurred amidst challenges at the country’s largest airport, which was working to manage a backlog of delayed and canceled flights following a severe snowstorm that struck the city on Sunday.

As of Tuesday morning, two of the airport’s five runways were still closed.
