Housemarque has unveiled Saros, the eagerly anticipated successor to its 2022 roguelite shooter, Returnal. Featuring actor Rahul Kohli, Saros is set to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, with enhancements for the PS5 Pro.
This announcement was made during the latest PlayStation State of Play event, and Saros showcases the signature style of Housemarque. Players will take on the role of Arjun Devraj, a Solatri enforcer on a quest for truth amid a perilous and ever-changing world overshadowed by an eclipse and inhabited by formidable beings. The tagline “come back stronger” echoes the roguelike genre, while the presence of fireballs highlights Housemarque’s affinity for bullet-hell gameplay.
Gregory Louden, the creative director, describes Saros as the “ultimate evolution” of the gameplay experience that Housemarque is known for. While it introduces a new single-player franchise, it builds upon the engaging third-person mechanics established in Returnal.
However, players can expect fresh experiences in Saros. Louden noted on the PlayStation Blog that a significant difference between Saros and Returnal lies in its permanent resources and progression system. In Saros, the world transforms when players meet their demise, yet they will retain the ability to permanently enhance their weaponry and suits.
Additional details are anticipated later this year, as Housemarque plans to reveal an extended gameplay preview.
