NASCAR driver Ryan Preece experienced a harrowing moment during the Daytona 500 on Sunday, when his vehicle went airborne and flipped upside down after a frightening pile-up.

With only five laps remaining in the race, Christopher Bell, who was leading the outside lane, made contact with the wall, triggering a chain reaction of crashes behind him.

One of the impacts lifted Preece’s car from the ground, ultimately causing it to flip over. This incident marked the most alarming crash in a race filled with intense action.

Remarkably, this was not the first time Preece had flipped during a race. In the recent 2023 Coke Zero Sugar 400, he experienced a similar incident, where his car spun around and barrel rolled with just five laps to go.

Following the race, Preece voiced concerns about the current car designs, emphasizing the need for safety improvements on superspeedways due to their propensity to lift off the ground.

“We keep knocking on a door expecting different results,” Preece stated to the media after the event. “It’s clear there’s a known issue at superspeedways, and I don’t want to be the example when something goes wrong.”

“I have a two-year-old daughter, and like many of us, I have family to consider. Measures must be taken to prevent cars from lifting off like that. This felt more dangerous than last year’s Daytona incident.”

While it’s commendable that Preece walked away uninjured from such a severe crash, experiencing a flip at Daytona is rare enough—having it happen twice is a gamble. Preece is sending a clear message about the need for improved safety in NASCAR before an unfortunate incident occurs.
