A faction of traditional Republicans in Congress has voiced strong criticism of the Trump administration’s recent alignment with Russia concerning resolutions related to the ongoing war in Ukraine. This disapproval arises as a significant portion of the GOP appears indifferent to the U.S.’s unexpected support for a long-time adversary.

Representative Don Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska, expressed his discontent on social media, stating, “The Trump Administration made a major error regarding Ukraine today. The overwhelming majority of Americans advocate for independence, freedom, and free markets while opposing aggressors.”

Bacon and other critics spoke out after the United States voted against a United Nations General Assembly resolution proposed by Ukraine, which condemned Russia’s invasion and demanded withdrawal and accountability for war crimes. In contrast, the U.S. managed to pass a separate U.N. Security Council resolution advocating for peace in Ukraine, which notably did not reprimand Russia. Key allies, including the United Kingdom and France, chose to abstain from the vote.

Senator John Curtis, a Republican from Utah, shared his concerns on social media, declaring that this shift in stance contradicts American principles of liberty and democracy, expressing that he was “deeply troubled by the vote,” which aligned the U.S. with Russia and North Korea.

Meanwhile, the Russian representative at the United Nations welcomed the U.S. decision, suggesting it instilled a sense of “optimism” about Europe’s security future.

This new approach by the Trump administration stands in stark contrast to recent years when the United States provided military aid to assist Ukrainian forces in resisting Russia’s aggression and allocated significant funding to support Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. Even among Republicans who have criticized the substantial aid packages approved for Ukraine, many unanimously recognized Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin, as the real aggressors in the conflict.
