When Texas Representative Pete Sessions arrived at a packed community center in the remote town of Trinity on Saturday, he intended to give a standard briefing on the administration’s first month. However, he was met with a wave of discontent and anger from constituents confronting him about Mr. Trump’s policies and strategies, urging him and his fellow lawmakers to take action.

Debra Norris, an attorney from Huntsville, argued, “The executive branch can only enforce the laws enacted by Congress; it cannot create laws.” She criticized the substantial layoffs and agency closures led by Musk as unconstitutional. “When will you reclaim authority from the executive and stop negatively impacting your constituents?” she demanded.

Louis Smith, a veteran residing in East Texas, conveyed to Mr. Sessions that while he supported efforts to eliminate unnecessary spending, he disapproved of the current approach and its public presentation.

“I appreciate your message, but you need to reach a broader audience,” Mr. Smith remarked. “The actions of that individual in South Africa are more detrimental than beneficial,” he said, referring to Musk, which elicited nods and applause from many attendees.
