If the Boston Red Sox are keen on acquiring Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the iconic team may soon have the chance to present their case to the talented slugger.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, as reported on Tuesday morning, Guerrero and the Toronto Blue Jays were unable to finalize a contract extension before the agreed-upon deadline. Passan also revealed that the four-time All-Star “does not intend to negotiate” a potential extension during the season, paving the way for Guerrero to enter free agency after the 2025 season.
This situation could play in favor of the Red Sox, particularly since the 25-year-old slugger has expressed interest in joining the team if he departs from Toronto. Reports indicate that Boston holds a strong admiration for Guerrero’s skills, with one leading MLB insider suggesting that Craig Breslow and his team have a “solid chance” of acquiring the power-hitting first baseman should he test free agency.
How promising is this opportunity? Another MLB insider mentioned last month that the Red Sox were slow to engage with Alex Bregman because the organization had plans to aggressively pursue Guerrero. Although Bregman ultimately signed a three-year deal in Boston, it shouldn’t deter the Red Sox from targeting Guerrero this offseason.
While there isn’t currently a specific role for Guerrero within the Red Sox lineup, considering the significant impact he could have at Fenway Park makes it clear that Boston should thoroughly evaluate this option when the opportunity arises.
