RED has officially launched its V-Raptor [X] and Komodo-X models featuring Nikon’s Z-mount, enabling filmmakers to access Nikon’s extensive lens library while introducing new camera functionalities that are exclusive to this mount.
This announcement arrives sooner than anticipated, as discussions held at NAB last year with both Nikon and RED had suggested a longer timeline. It also marks the first introduction of a first-party lens mount in RED’s camera lineup.
According to RED Digital Cinema CEO, Keiji Oishi, “This signifies the dawn of our collaboration with Nikon, paving the way for the new Z Cinema Series. By adopting the Z Mount, RED is broadening options for lens selection, enhancing the creative freedom of filmmakers. This alliance allows access to Nikon’s innovative Z lens series, PL options, F Mount glass, and a range of sought-after vintage lenses.”
Transitioning to the Z mount not only facilitates new native lens compatibility but also led to enhancements in the cameras’ performance through optimizations made possible by this collaboration.
Notably, RED reports that the V-Raptor [X] and Komodo-X will benefit from enhanced autofocus capabilities that are more precise and less prone to instability. Although RED has implemented phase detection autofocus (PDAF) since the launch of the original Komodo, the company’s collaboration with Nikon has enriched their understanding of this technology. Even though the hardware remains similar to the RF-mount variant, the Z-mount models feature refined algorithms that elevate performance.
As part of the firmware update 2.0, which coincides with the release of the Z mount, improvements will be made to the autofocus system across all lens mounts. However, using Z mount lenses will provide an additional layer of refinement due to RED’s comprehensive access to the hardware pipeline.
This firmware update also introduces enhanced autofocus control. Previously, users could only toggle autofocus on or off, but the new update now allows filmmakers to adjust the sensitivity of the autofocus, whether slower or faster. With the Z mount integration, filmmakers will experience even more precise control over autofocus speed.
Furthermore, RED offers seamless aperture adjustments via the control rings on Nikon lenses or through the RED smartphone app, facilitating fine, incremental changes. This functionality isn’t limited to standard stops; users can make real-time adjustments to the iris. This feature is exclusive to Nikon Z mount due to the specialized hardware connection between the camera and lens.
It’s worth noting that while every Z lens features control rings, not all support linear focusing modes. Therefore, linear focusing will be limited to select lenses, with a comprehensive list of compatible lenses to be released later.
The RED V-Raptor [X] priced at $29,995 and the Komodo-X available for $6,995 now come in Nikon Z mount options. Additionally, filmmakers have the choice to convert existing RF mount versions of these cameras to Z mount, with conversion fees of $1,695 for the V-Raptor [X] and $1,595 for the Komodo-X.
In a bid to enhance affordability, RED is reinstating its trade-in program. Customers can trade in RED DSMC, Raven, Scarlet-W, DSMC2, or Ranger cameras for credit towards a new RED V-Raptor XL [X] Pack or RED V-Raptor Pack [X] Pack, available in either the new Z Mount or RF Mount configurations.
Oishi concludes, “Our goal is to empower filmmakers with infinite possibilities to realize their vision, and the synergy between RED and Nikon’s advanced technologies will yield cutting-edge tools to elevate our filmmaking community’s creativity.”
