DENVER (AP) — On Friday, prosecutors are expected to unveil evidence suggesting that a Colorado dentist, who faces charges for the alleged murder of his wife, attempted to arrange for a fellow inmate to assassinate a detective involved in the investigation against him.

James Craig is accused of murdering his wife by lacing her protein shakes with poison nearly two years ago, allegedly requesting an expedited delivery of potassium cyanide, which he claimed was needed for a patient, after previous attempts using arsenic proved unsuccessful.

Lately, prosecutors brought new charges against him, including solicitation for murder and solicitation for perjury. While the charging documents do not specify the target of Craig’s alleged murder plot, police from Aurora, Colorado, have confirmed that it was indeed a detective connected to the case.

During a hearing scheduled for Friday afternoon, prosecutors plan to present additional information aimed at persuading the judge to allow these new charges against Craig to proceed during his trial.

Craig’s trial has been postponed, with no new date announced yet. He has entered a plea of not guilty to first-degree murder, two counts of solicitation to tamper with evidence, and an earlier solicitation charge related to perjury. A message left for his defense attorneys, Lisa Moses and Robert Werking, was not immediately returned.

Angela Craig, aged 43, passed away in March 2023 from poisoning involving cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a substance commonly found in over-the-counter eye drops, according to the coroner’s report. The Craigs had been married for 23 years and shared six children.
