Pope Francis Remains Hospitalized for Ongoing Care, Medical Team Provides Update

At a recent press conference held at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, members of Pope Francis’ medical team announced that while he is not currently in grave danger, his recovery is still in progress. They indicated that the Pope will likely remain hospitalized for at least another week.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the lead physician responsible for the Pope’s care, alongside Dr. Luigi Carbone, Vice-Director of the Vatican’s healthcare service, addressed a group of journalists for approximately forty minutes. They clarified that although the Pope is not "in danger of death," he is not yet completely “out of danger.”

Dr. Alfieri reassured the public that Pope Francis is not reliant on a ventilator, even though he continues to face challenges with his breathing, which has limited his physical activity. Despite these health concerns, the Pope remains in good spirits, often working and sharing jokes. In a lighthearted moment, when a doctor greeted him with “Hello, Holy Father,” the Pope humorously replied, “Hello, Holy Son.”

When asked about their primary concerns, the medical team explained the risk of potential infections, expressing that germs present in the Pope’s respiratory tract could enter his bloodstream, leading to serious complications like sepsis.

However, Dr. Alfieri expressed optimism that Pope Francis would eventually be discharged from the hospital and return to Casa Santa Marta at the Vatican, while acknowledging that he will continue to manage chronic respiratory issues upon his return.
