Pope Francis is currently experiencing “initial, mild kidney failure,” alongside a significant respiratory condition, placing the 88-year-old pope in serious condition in a Rome hospital, as reported by the Vatican on Sunday.
The Vatican described the pontiff’s health as “complex,” noting that while the kidney issue is “currently under control,” there have been no additional respiratory crises following the one he faced on Saturday. They stated that the pope remained “alert and well-oriented,” even attending Mass in his hospital suite with the medical team attending to him.
Blood tests revealed early signs of kidney failure; however, they also indicated that the pope’s anemia had shown improvement. He continues to receive substantial supplemental oxygen, according to the latest updates from the Vatican.
Given the “complexity of his clinical picture,” and the anticipated time needed for his treatment to show results, medical professionals have indicated that the situation remains critical.
As global concerns grow about his health, prayers for Pope Francis have flooded in from around the world. In a homily delivered at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan urged attendees to “pray with and for” the pope. He also acknowledged a sentiment not openly discussed at the Vatican: that recovery for Francis may not be assured.
