Authorities in Dubai have apprehended a man who exhibited “fixated behavior” towards British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu during the Dubai Tennis Championships this week, as reported by the media office of the Dubai Government.

The 22-year-old athlete has chosen to withdraw her complaints, while the individual has signed a “formal undertaking” to maintain a distance from Raducanu.

“Dubai officials acted promptly in response to the incident involving Emma Raducanu, following local legal protocols,” the media office stated on X Thursday afternoon.

According to the report, Dubai Police detained a tourist who approached Raducanu, handing her a note and taking her photo, which caused her distress during the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. Although Raducanu later opted to forgo charges, the man has been prohibited from attending future events and is required to keep his distance from her. Dubai remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of its residents and visitors.

This unsettling incident transpired earlier in the week when the individual reportedly approached Raducanu at her hotel, delivering a letter and snapping her photo, as reported by the Associated Press.

During her round of 32 match against Karolina Muchova on Tuesday, Raducanu became emotional upon seeing the man in the crowd.

She approached the umpire before retreating behind the chair as the umpire appeared to be conveying a message via walkie-talkie.

Muchova came over to check on her fellow competitor, ultimately defeating Raducanu in straight sets.

The former US Open champion opened up about her experience in an Instagram story following the incident. “Thank you for the supportive messages,” Raducanu shared on social media.

“It was a challenging situation yesterday, but I’ll be alright and I’m proud of how I focused and competed despite the beginning of the match. A big thank you to Karolina for being such a great sport and best wishes to her going forward in the tournament.”

The individual involved has been removed from the venue and prohibited from future events pending a threat evaluation, as stated by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) in a message posted on its X account.

“The safety of our players is paramount, and tournaments are encouraged to adopt best practices for security at international sporting events,” the WTA emphasized. “We are actively collaborating with Emma and her team to ensure her well-being and provide any necessary support. Our commitment remains strong in working with the tournaments and their security teams around the world to foster a safe environment for all athletes.”

This is not the first time Raducanu has faced a similar situation. Approximately three years ago, Amrit Magar, then 35, was arrested and given a five-year restraining order for stalking her when she was just 19.

The individual involved in the recent incident is not believed to be British, according to reports from the Daily Mail, which suggests no connection to the previous case involving Magar.
