Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, recently shared that he is no longer focused on shifting PlayStation 5 and PC gamers exclusively to Xbox. He recognizes the deep investment players have in their current gaming libraries and aims to expand access, allowing a wider audience to enjoy Xbox titles on various platforms.

During a conversation on the XboxEra podcast, Spencer highlighted that while selling games on rival platforms results in Xbox retaining only 70% of the sales revenue—30% going to the competitor’s storefront—this income is still crucial for building a strong portfolio of games.

“Many players stick to their PlayStation or Nintendo libraries, prefer those controllers, or simply enjoy the games offered there. I don’t want to disregard the potential for building a business and gaining fans in those spaces,” Spencer explained.

He added, “I’m not focusing on bringing everyone over to Xbox anymore. Since so many people are dedicated to where they play, my goal is to broaden the opportunity for them to experience Xbox games. The 70% revenue from games sold on other platforms supports our efforts to develop impressive game portfolios, as demonstrated at our recent Developer Direct event. I hope this trend continues throughout the year.”

However, Spencer also acknowledged that this approach may evolve. Ultimately, he would prefer to secure full revenue from all games distributed by Xbox.

That said, Spencer emphasized that Xbox remains committed to its hardware initiatives. “Of course, we earn more when games are played on our platform, which is why investing in our system is a priority,” he stated.

His remarks came on the heels of a prior interview, where he was questioned about whether games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Starfield will retain any exclusivity window on Xbox. His response was blunt: “No.”
