New York City Council Speaker Calls for Mayor Eric Adams’s Resignation Amid Deputy Mayor Exodus
Adrienne Adams, the Speaker of the New York City Council and a key ally of Mayor Eric Adams, publicly urged the mayor to step down on Monday. This urgent call for resignation followed the departure of four out of eight deputy mayors, a development that severely undermines an administration already grappling with controversies, indictments, and a public perception that suggests the mayor has prioritized his personal interests over those of the city.
In her statement, Ms. Adams emphasized, “The resignations of deputy mayors illustrate that Mayor Adams has lost the confidence and trust of his own team, his fellow government officials, and the residents of New York City. He must now focus on the needs of our city and its people by stepping aside.”
Former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn remarked that it was unprecedented for a speaker to advocate for a mayor’s resignation, noting the significant implications of such a move.
“This clearly indicates a profound lack of confidence in the mayor,” Ms. Quinn acknowledged. “When one branch of government calls on the executive to resign, it complicates the potential for future collaboration.”
