Hope Remains for HLX’s Progress
Recent updates to the game engine have generated optimism for the HLX project, especially following trustworthy reports indicating that Valve initiated a friends and family playtesting phase for the game toward the end of 2024. Although many of Valve’s projects have undergone significant transformations during such testing, McVicker notes that these new engine enhancements serve as “solid confirmation that HLX has successfully weathered the holiday season, appears to be on a stable path without any form of reboot, and an announcement seems to be drawing nearer.”
A December video from “Gabe Follower” suggests that Half-Life 3 has entered a friends-and-family testing phase.
While McVicker does not delve deeply into every engine variable revealed in the latest updates from Valve, he provides an insightful summary accompanied by informed speculation about their potential implications for HLX. This includes indications of a “highly evolved” physics engine reminiscent of Half-Life 2, capable of tracking characteristics such as buoyancy, flammability, and deformation, as well as offering fluid simulation and dynamic sound features based on the state of objects.
Particularly interesting is McVicker’s mention of a potential new NPC “mood system,” which would allow AI characters to respond both “verbally and non-verbally” to their surroundings, reacting to what they can see, hear, or even smell. Additionally, the code suggests a mechanism for “dynamically adjustable nav meshes,” enabling NPCs to navigate around destructible environmental obstacles, along with a method for placing in-game items semi-randomly during multiple playthroughs, similar to the Left 4 Dead‘s director system.
It’s understandable to approach this news with skepticism, especially given the numerous years of unfruitful speculations concerning Half-Life 3. However, when McVicker hints that signs point toward a potential announcement for Half-Life 3 this year, it’s hard not to feel hopeful; let’s just say we want to believe.
