Windows 11 has been available for some time now, but many users of Windows 10 are not ready to make the leap, even with the official end-of-life date set for October 14, 2025. According to a report by PC Guide, the latest Steam Hardware & Software Survey from January 2025 indicates that over 44% of users are still utilizing Windows 10, while more than 55% have transitioned to Windows 11.
Despite being released four years ago, Windows 11’s adoption has faced several hurdles. One significant factor is that the distinctions between Windows 10 and Windows 11 are not immediately clear, leaving many users questioning the need to upgrade. Additionally, Windows 11 introduced stringent hardware requirements that have excluded older devices from upgrading, even though these older machines are still capable of running many PC games efficiently.
As Windows 10 approaches its end-of-life, Microsoft will discontinue software updates and security patches, prompting the company to urge users to upgrade for some time. As a result, a gradual shift in user numbers seems likely—data from September of the previous year showed Windows 10 holding a slight majority of Steam’s user base, but it has since lost around 5%. The same survey also highlighted that the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 is the most popular graphics card among Steam users, with 16 GB of RAM being the standard for most. Additionally, a significant number of Steam users have hard drives exceeding 1 TB total capacity, with between 100 to 249 GB of free space available.
