Myles Garrett has introduced a new element to his ongoing tensions with the Cleveland Browns.
According to multiple sources, the 29-year-old defensive star informed the team on Friday that he will not be pursuing a contract extension.
Garrett, who initially asked to be traded from the Browns last month, expressed that his personal objectives do not align with the team’s aspirations.
“In discussions with the Browns’ management, I don’t believe our future is focused on winning at this moment,” Garrett shared with ESPN’s “NFL Countdown” a few hours prior to Super Bowl LIX. “That’s what I aim to achieve at this point in my career.”
Despite Garrett’s sentiments, Browns General Manager Andrew Berry emphasized that the organization has no intent to trade their star player.
“As I’ve mentioned before, Myles is a crucial part of our team, a remarkable individual, and an outstanding player,” Berry told Cleveland.com. “While I understand his trade request, we remain steadfast in our position. It’s hard to envision a scenario that benefits the Browns without Myles being part of our organization.”
Berry further added, “I prefer not to discuss any dialogues I may have with other teams out of respect. This is not pertinent to the current circumstance, as we have no desire to trade Myles.”
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski echoed Berry’s sentiments, affirming his commitment to future success.
“I’m equally focused on winning,” Stefanski conveyed to Cleveland.com. “I’m determined to secure a championship. This is our mentality, and we are diligently working toward that goal.”
The Browns selected Garrett as the first overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he has spent his entire eight-year career in Cleveland, earning six NFL All-Pro designations and being named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.
Previously, in December, Garrett indicated that he is not “looking to rebuild,” especially considering the Browns’ difficult season marked by a 3-14 record.
