Since the unveiling of the Google Pixel 9a last September, my perception of this upcoming mid-range smartphone has been far from favorable. The removal of the signature camera bar, replaced with a conventional camera housing, and the overall loss of distinctive features from the previous Pixel A series models left me feeling unimpressed.

While I wouldn’t proclaim it as the most aesthetically pleasing or expertly crafted phone I’ve encountered, I realize my initial reaction might have been overly harsh. I’m beginning to appreciate the Pixel 9a’s revamped design for several compelling reasons.

The color scheme of a smartphone can significantly impact its appeal. Even the most sophisticated hardware and elegant camera layout can be undermined if the color choices are lackluster and uninspired. Samsung’s recent experience with the Galaxy S25 Ultra illustrates this point. Despite its outstanding hardware, the device was marred by monotonous color options.

This latest leak of the Pixel 9a showcases exciting color choices that could greatly enhance its aesthetic value.

As reported by Android Headlines, the Pixel 9a will be offered in the familiar Obsidian (black) and Porcelain (white) shades. However, it’s exciting to learn that vibrant new options like Peony (pink) and Iris (purple) will also be available. If the colors match those depicted in Android Headlines’ leaked images, Google has achieved an impressive aesthetic.

My personal favorite is the Iris shade. It beautifully balances a striking appearance without being overwhelming. Pastel tones can be tricky to execute, but Google seems to have succeeded. I also appreciate the bright, lively look of the Peony hue, which appears to be a more saturated variant compared to the Peony of the Google Pixel 9, and I am here for it.

Google consistently excels at offering appealing colors in the Pixel A series, and it’s encouraging to see this trend continue with the Pixel 9a. The vibrant colors also help restore some of the personality that seems to have faded with the new camera design, which ties into my next point.

Initially, I was not a fan of the Pixel 9a’s camera design, which lacks the traditional camera bar, and my thoughts haven’t changed significantly over time. Nevertheless, I no longer view it as a dealbreaker.

Having become accustomed to the camera bars since the Pixel 6 series, seeing a Pixel device without this feature felt unusual and somewhat displeasing at first. It’s worth acknowledging that we experienced similar sentiments when the Pixel 6 series was first unveiled, as the camera bar design met with widely varying reactions initially. However, after engaging with the devices, it seamlessly integrated into our perception of Pixel phones.

This sentiment resonates with the current evolution of the Pixel 9a’s design. As we adapt to this new aesthetic, which might appear strange in initial renderings, I’m confident it will quickly gain acceptance once users experience it in reality. The new camera layout isn’t unattractive; it simply represents a shift from previous models.

Additionally, we should recognize a substantial advantage of this camera redesign: it sits nearly flush with the rest of the device, enhancing usability. While I enjoy unique camera designs, I also appreciate being able to lay my smartphone flat on a surface without wobbling, and it seems the Pixel 9a may offer this convenience once again.

Lastly, I’d like to comment on the Pixel 9a’s rounded corners and flat frame design. It’s undoubtedly a noticeable shift from the Google Pixel 8a, and it bears striking similarities to an iPhone. However, I don’t perceive this change negatively.

Google’s introduction of this design language with the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro has demonstrated its effectiveness. The Pixel 9 series is both comfortable to hold and exhibits excellent build quality. While there might be hints of Apple’s design influence, isn’t it better to embrace a device that feels and looks exceptional? If this glass-and-metal construction enhances repairability, then that’s even better.

One of the biggest challenges for Google will be achieving a balance in construction quality for the Pixel 9a, which is likely to be priced lower than its Pixel 9 counterparts. Google succeeded remarkably with the Pixel 9 ($799) and Pixel 9 Pro ($999), but can the same be done for the Pixel 9a, potentially priced between $499 and $549?

All of these observations are based on leaked images, so it’s important to take them with a grain of caution. Nothing is confirmed until Google officially announces it, but judging by historical trends and previous leaks, it seems highly likely that these Pixel 9a renders accurately represent what we can expect.

If that is indeed the case, I’m ready to acknowledge that my immediate judgment about the Pixel 9a may have been misguided. While it may not represent the pinnacle of smartphone design, it certainly does not fall into the realm of being dreadful or catastrophic. With the anticipated specifications and pricing, Google is poised to offer substantial value this year that could win over skeptics in no time.
