The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is reportedly set to grant a member of Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency access to sensitive taxpayer information, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The IRS holds extensive private data about millions of Americans, which includes tax returns, Social Security numbers, addresses, banking information, and employment details.
Harrison Fields, a spokesperson for the White House, expressed, “Waste, fraud, and abuse have been deeply rooted in our flawed system for far too long. It requires direct access to identify and rectify these issues.” He further stated, “DOGE will continue to expose the instances of fraud uncovered, as the public has a right to know how their hard-earned tax dollars are being spent.”
This inquiry into the IRS system signifies the latest action by Musk’s team to broaden access to governmental data, pushing beyond the conventional limits set for political appointees. Recently, the Treasury Department has been scrutinized after Musk’s associates began examining the Bureau of the Fiscal Service’s payment systems that handle federal transactions.
On Thursday, Gavin Kliger, a software engineer involved in the DOGE initiative, was seen working at the IRS headquarters. He is set to take on the role of senior adviser to the acting IRS commissioner. Although the specifics of his responsibilities are still being finalized, he is anticipated to have significant access to IRS systems, as confirmed by insiders not authorized to speak publicly.
