A mother has shared her traumatic experience, describing it as being “massacred” and “left to die” after experiencing severe complications from a failed abortion. This incident led her to suffer from septic shock, ultimately resulting in the amputation of both her limbs. Priscilla Dray, now 36, was reportedly in “great shape” when she entered the hospital for the procedure in 2011. She claims that the medical staff failed to provide necessary antibiotics following the surgery, despite her showing clear symptoms of infection.
Dray’s medical ordeal escalated dramatically when, just a month after her abortion, she was forced to have life-altering surgery that resulted in the removal of her legs, right forearm, and left hand due to necrosis. Two doctors faced charges for causing unintentional injuries at a court in Bordeaux.
In an interview with French media, Dray recounted her experience of a frightening fever reaching 39.6°C after the procedure, which led to misdiagnosis by an intern who suggested endometriosis. Despite requesting antibiotics, she alleges that her pleas were ignored, leaving her vulnerable to a severe and untreated infection.
Expressing her anguish, she stated that she felt “massacred” as her health deteriorated from severe sepsis, necessitating the amputations. The day after being discharged from the hospital, on July 24, 2022, she sought assistance from her GP in Cap Ferret, fearing she might be suffering from septicaemia, as reported by The Mirror.
Her proactive GP quickly returned her to the hospital, providing a vital note for the medical team—yet, alarmingly, the note was reportedly lost in the chaos as Dray battled to breathe and combat her critical condition.
In her heartfelt testimony to M6’s Zone Interdite, she expressed: “I trusted them, and this is the condition they left me in. They essentially condemned me to death.” On July 24, her chance of survival had plummeted to a mere 5%, as she was re-admitted to the hospital, according to France3 reports.
Dray’s situation worsened into necrosis from septic shock, leading to her admission into intensive care due to severe burns. By late August, the difficult decision to proceed with amputations was made.
Struggling with the aftermath, she reflected in an interview with Pourquoi Docteur in 2017: “I still cannot comprehend why I was abandoned in that maternity ward.” After giving birth to her third child, Dray opted for an abortion, which resulted in her not seeing her baby for three months. In the wake of this tragedy, the hospital was fined 300,000 euros, and three individuals, including a gynecologist, faced indictment for neglecting to provide antibiotics.
In 2018, Dray opened up about her ongoing struggles with Sud Ouest: “Every day requires adaptability and organization. The most difficult part is coming to terms with what I can no longer do independently.” She pointed out that her three children are her main source of strength, stating, “Without them, I wouldn’t have the same resolve. I continue to hold onto hope for recovery and count on advancements in medical technology.”
