Romania’s Justice Minister, Radu Marinescu, has demanded a public clarification regarding the departure of notable social media personalities Andrew and Tristan Tate from the country on Thursday, raising questions about the decision.
The Tate brothers, who are currently facing serious allegations such as human trafficking in Romania, had been subjected to a travel restriction for over two years, which was recently lifted, permitting them to travel to the United States.
Marinescu has urged the special prosecution service, Dilcot, to “undertake any necessary investigations to reveal the truth.”
Both Andrew, aged 38, and 36-year-old Tristan have vehemently denied the charges leveled against them.
The brothers hold dual citizenship in the US and the UK and were initially apprehended in Romania in 2022.
They stand accused of forming an organized group with the intent to sexually exploit women, alongside charges of human trafficking. Additionally, Andrew Tate faces a rape accusation.
In the United States, they are involved in a civil lawsuit from a woman who claims the brothers forced her into sex work and subsequently defamed her after she testified to Romanian officials.
Separate legal actions have also been initiated against them in the UK for similar charges related to rape and trafficking.
After spending several months under house arrest in Romania, prosecutors announced the lifting of the travel ban on Thursday, restoring their US passports despite ongoing investigations into their alleged offenses, with expectations for their return to Romania.
The brothers’ exit has raised suspicions that prosecutors might have faced political pressure from the Trump administration, although the US President claimed he was unaware of their release.
The Romanian Justice Minister emphasized that the Tates “risk pre-trial detention” if they do not come back to Romania to continue facing investigations in their cases.
“There are legal channels available to address this situation,” Marinescu stated, potentially referencing the extradition agreement between the US and Romania.
This situation has sparked widespread concern among Romanians about the disparity in legal treatment between the wealthy and powerful versus the average citizen.
