WASHINGTON (AP) — A military aircraft transporting Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Sen. Jim Risch was compelled to return to Washington late Thursday due to a mechanical malfunction.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed, “This evening, while traveling from Washington to Munich, the plane carrying Secretary Rubio encountered a mechanical issue.”

She added, “The aircraft has turned around and is heading back to Joint Base Andrews. The Secretary is set to continue his journey to Germany and the Middle East on a different plane.”

The problem, which an official indicated was related to the cockpit windshield of the C-32, a modified Boeing 757, arose approximately 90 minutes after departure from Joint Base Andrews.

While Rubio is planning to complete his trip on an alternate aircraft, it remains uncertain whether this delay will impact his scheduled meeting on Friday morning with Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Munich.
