On Thursday in Munich, over two dozen individuals sustained injuries when a car collided with a union protest. The driver, identified as a 24-year-old man with prior interactions with law enforcement, was apprehended by the police. Authorities suspect that the incident, conducted by an Afghan national, was a premeditated assault, as stated by Markus Söder, the governor of Bavaria.
The alarming crash occurred around 10:30 AM, when the vehicle overtook a police car escorting the demonstration and surged into the gathering crowd. This incident leaves haunting memories of a previous attack in December, where a vehicle barreled into a Christmas market in Magdeburg, injuring approximately 300 people and resulting in six fatalities.
Images and videos from the accident scene depicted a heavily damaged beige Mini Cooper, reportedly the vehicle that struck the crowd. Emergency responders, including a helicopter and multiple ambulances, arrived quickly to transport the injured—at least 28 individuals, with two suffering severe injuries—to local hospitals.
This incident took place less than a mile away from the Munich Security Conference, set to commence the following day, which draws significant attention from top officials and media worldwide. However, police officials have ruled out any connections between the crash and the conference.
Sandra Demmelhuber, a journalist from Bayerischer Rundfunk, witnessed the chaotic aftermath of the collision. She described the scene, noting, “There is a person lying on the street and a young man was led away by the police. People were sitting on the ground, visibly upset and in tears,” as she shared on social media.
The demonstration was organized by Verdi, one of Germany’s largest trade unions, which had called for a one-day strike involving city employees. In response to the incident, police established a command post at a nearby restaurant and are appealing to witnesses for information.
