On Thursday, Luis Rubiales, the former president of Spain’s soccer federation, was found guilty of sexual assault after forcibly kissing Jennifer Hermoso, a player on the women’s national team, following their victory in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

This incident ignited a nationwide scandal, sparking intense discussions about the pervasive issues of sexism within Spanish soccer and marking a pivotal moment in Spain’s #MeToo movement.

In a ruling on Thursday, a Spanish court imposed a fine of 10,800 euros (approximately $11,270) on Mr. Rubiales, though he avoided a prison sentence. The court acquitted him of an additional coercion charge.

Jennifer Hermoso has maintained that the kiss was non-consensual, which Mr. Rubiales contested. During a court appearance near Madrid earlier this month, he remarked, “You don’t win a World Cup every day,” and mentioned that he had kissed other players during celebrations.
