KFC Relocates Headquarters from Kentucky to Texas
KFC, the iconic fried chicken chain, is set to transition its U.S. headquarters from Louisville, Kentucky, to Plano, Texas, as announced by owner Yum Brands on Tuesday. The shift will require approximately 100 KFC employees in the U.S. to move within the next six months.
This relocation is part of Yum’s strategic plan to establish two primary corporate offices: one in Plano and another in Irvine, California. The global teams for KFC and Pizza Hut are already based in Plano, whereas Taco Bell and Habit Burger & Grill maintain their teams in Irvine.
In addition to the headquarters move, Yum’s U.S. remote workforce, consisting of about 90 employees, will also be asked to relocate to the new corporate campus.
However, Yum Brands is not completely severing ties with Kentucky. The company and the KFC Foundation will keep corporate offices in Louisville and are planning to construct a new flagship restaurant in their original hometown.
The trend of relocating corporate offices has grown since the Covid-19 pandemic, as many businesses reassess their locations in light of evolving tax environments and the shift towards hybrid or remote work setups. According to a 2023 CBRE report, Texas has emerged as a preferred destination due to its business-friendly policies.
In a related move in 2020, Yum’s competitor, Papa John’s, relocated its headquarters from Louisville to Atlanta. They later decided against selling their former office, instead retaining it for employees who remained in Louisville.
