Recently, the Jets had a meeting with Aaron Rodgers to discuss their future plans and informed him that they would be moving on without him.
In a joint statement, Head Coach Aaron Glenn and General Manager Darren Mougey stated, “Last week, we met with Aaron and expressed our intention to pursue a different direction at the quarterback position. It was essential to hold this conversation now to ensure clarity and give everyone ample time to plan for what lies ahead. We sincerely appreciate his leadership, commitment, and passion for the organization, and we wish him nothing but success in his future endeavors.”
Aaron Rodgers, who is recovering from an Achilles tear and turned 41 in December, played 17 games last season. He recorded impressive numbers with 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, ranking as the third-best single-season performance in Jets history.
Chairman Woody Johnson expressed his gratitude, stating, “I want to personally thank Aaron for his time with the New York Jets. His arrival last season generated immense excitement, and I’m thankful he chose to join us to further his illustrious career. From the very beginning, he encapsulated the spirit of what it means to be a Jet, wholeheartedly engaging with our fans and immersing himself in the city. That dedication will be my lasting memory of his tenure here. He will always be welcomed back, and I wish him all the best in whatever he decides to pursue next.”
Rodgers joined the Jets from the Packers in a trade that was finalized on April 26, 2023. With a strong defensive lineup and talented young players on offense, the four-time NFL MVP quickly adapted to his new environment.
“There’s a unique feeling about playing in this city for such a historic team,” he remarked. “Reflecting on Super Bowl III, being part of something significant would certainly cement your place in the history of this organization. Having spent 18 years with an iconic team, it would be thrilling to contribute to the legacy of the Jets as well.”
Unfortunately, Rodgers’ journey with the Jets was cut short just four snaps into his debut when he suffered the Achilles injury during a Monday night game against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1. He made remarkable efforts to recover and even practiced in the winter of 2023, but ultimately did not play again as the Jets concluded his first season with a 7-10 record.
As the Jets embark on a new chapter, they will introduce a new quarterback alongside Head Coach Glenn, General Manager Mougey, new offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, and largely revamped coaching staff. Currently on the roster alongside veteran Tyrod Taylor are Jordan Travis, a fifth-round pick from Florida State placed on the reserve/non-football injury list in August, and Adrian Martinez, who signed a futures contract in January.
