Recently, when Elon Musk launched his cost-reduction campaign through the initiative known as the “Department of Government Efficiency” (Doge), it showcased a “wall of receipts” that claimed significant reductions in federal expenditure. This list was presented as a cornerstone of a transformative overhaul of the U.S. government.

However, similar to many of Musk’s unique interactions with federal agencies, this initiative has been plagued with inaccuracies, misunderstandings, and lack of transparency.

In the latest twist, Doge has quietly removed all five of the largest entries from its “wall of receipts” after the previously touted “savings” were found to be exaggerated.

The deletions, which were first highlighted by the New York Times, occurred on Tuesday without any explanation. A spokesperson from the White House merely stated that Musk’s drastic approach had “identified billions in savings.”

Currently, Doge asserts that it has cut $65 billion from federal expenditures, a notable increase from an earlier claim of $55 billion. However, the detailed savings shown on the “wall of receipts” have dropped significantly, from $16.6 billion to $9.6 billion post-deletion.

The “wall of receipts” serves as the sole means of public accountability provided by Musk, who has been granted significant latitude by Donald Trump to examine federal departments. The webpage boldly states: “The people voted for major reform.”

What the populace has received so far is an alleged “saving” pertaining to the costs of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), claimed to amount to $8 billion. However, as the New York Times notes, the entire budget for the immigration agency is around $8 billion, meaning the actual savings should have been listed as $8 million instead.

This accounting error has since been removed from Doge’s platform. Additionally, the other four significant entries that were scrubbed include three reductions of $655 million each associated with the troubled U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

This initially seemed impressive, until CBS News uncovered that it was a single funding cut recorded erroneously multiple times.

The most substantial of the five disappearing “savings” was a $1.9 billion entry described as a reduction at the treasury department, based on a contract that was annulled last year during Joe Biden’s presidency.
