Measles Cases Reported in Texas, Including Houston
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The State Health Department has reported a total of at least 92 measles cases across Texas, with two confirmed instances in Houston.
A significant concern centers on an outbreak in West Texas, which accounts for 90 of the cases. Among these, it is noted that 85 individuals are either unvaccinated or have an unclear vaccination history.
In January, the Houston Health Department disclosed that the two cases in the city were linked to international travel by unvaccinated adults. The department’s official website provides a list of potential exposure sites.
Dr. Janeana White from the Houston Health Department stated that one of the infected individuals was hospitalized but has since recovered, while the other has been monitored and is currently doing well. The city is actively working to disseminate information to the public and is collaborating closely with adjacent health departments to enhance awareness regarding the situation.
Dr. White emphasized the importance of informing healthcare providers, noting, "It’s not solely the responsibility of healthcare providers to identify and manage patients. Many may not have encountered such cases during their training. We are committed to equipping providers with the necessary information about the symptoms to recognize and how to assess patients, especially given the contagious nature of measles. We encourage practices to minimize waiting times for patients who may exhibit symptoms."
Key symptoms of measles to watch for include:
- High fever
- Ear infections
- Runny nose
- Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
- A widespread rash
Should anyone exhibit these symptoms, they are advised to contact their doctor beforehand and mention the possibility of having measles.
Additionally, Dr. White recommended that individuals who completed their vaccination series years ago should consider consulting with their physician about a blood test to check for ongoing immunity to measles.
