Google has recently announced an exciting update for its Gemini AI chatbot, enabling it to customize responses based on past conversations. This new feature, unveiled in a blog post on Thursday, allows Gemini to summarize earlier discussions or retrieve details you’ve shared in different chats.
As a result, you won’t need to repeat information already provided to Gemini or sift through previous threads to find relevant details.
The conversation recall feature is now available for English-speaking users subscribed to Google’s AI chatbot service, Google One AI Premium, which costs $20 per month. Google plans to introduce this functionality in additional languages and for enterprise users in the upcoming weeks.
The goal of this update is to enhance the personalization and fluidity of interactions with Gemini. However, not every user may welcome the idea of having their past conversations stored.
To mitigate privacy concerns, Google has implemented options for users to review and delete their chat history as well as determine how long it remains stored. Users also have the ability to disable the recall feature by visiting the “My Activity” page within Gemini. Importantly, Google assures that it does not use conversation histories to train AI models.
Other AI chatbot providers are also exploring similar memory and recall capabilities. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has mentioned that enhanced memory is one of the most requested improvements for ChatGPT.
Both Google and OpenAI have rolled out broader “memory” features for their chatbots over the past year. These capabilities allow Gemini and ChatGPT to remember specifics about users, such as preferred names, dietary preferences, or transportation choices. However, these memory functions do not include automatic recall of entire chat histories by default.
