Sigma has unveiled the impressive 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports lens, designed for both L-mount and Sony E-mount cameras. This premium ultra-telephoto zoom lens boasts the optical quality and brightness akin to a prime lens, while providing the adaptability of an extensive zoom range.
According to Sigma, “The Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports is an innovative ultra-telephoto zoom lens that combines the practicality of a zoom with the exceptional optical capabilities of a prime lens.” They claim it is an ideal option for sports, action, and wildlife photography, where quick changes and fleeting photographic opportunities are common.
This substantial lens measures 6.6 inches (167.6mm) in diameter, extends to 18.4 inches (467.4mm) in length, and weighs in at an impressive 140.6 ounces (3,985g). Thankfully, it incorporates an internal zoom mechanism that helps stabilize the center of gravity. Its optical structure includes 28 elements organized into 21 groups, featuring six FLD lenses and one SLD element. The aperture range from f/4 to f/22 is achieved through a 13-blade diaphragm, complemented by Sigma’s Nano Porous Coating.
Crafted from magnesium alloy, the lens barrel supports a carbon fiber hood. Notably, the balance of the lens is tilted towards the camera, enhancing maneuverability despite its heft. Sigma has also utilized a thermal insulating paint on the exterior, which effectively minimizes heat absorption from sunlight, preventing overheating in prolonged outdoor conditions, such as during nature or motorsport shoots. Additionally, the lens is built to be resistant to dust and water splashes.
Focus is driven by Sigma’s High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) motor, specifically designed for “high thrust,” ensuring rapid and precise movement of the focusing groups. This results in outstanding subject tracking accuracy.
Moreover, the lens features Sigma’s OS2 optical stabilization technology, which includes an intelligent internal driving unit with a well-crafted actuator and high-precision sensor. Photographers can choose between two stabilization modes: Mode 1, ideal for most still photography and video, and Mode 2, specially optimized for panning shots.
As highlighted by Sigma, “Mode 2 stabilizes the image during horizontal, vertical, or diagonal movements, accommodating any camera orientation, thus allowing photographers to capture fast-moving subjects with heightened precision.”
This new Sigma lens is equipped with a customizable function ring that presents two operational modes. The Focus preset mode permits the user to quickly shift to a pre-defined focus position, while the Power Focus mode facilitates consistent focusing speed, ideal for smooth focus transitions during video capture and minimal movements during handheld shooting. The focus speed can vary in two increments based on the function ring’s angle of use.
The included tripod socket is designed with a rotating mechanism, allowing optional click and de-click detents at 90-degree angles. The tripod foot accommodates Arca-Swiss cutouts, and for those who prefer alternative mounts, Sigma provides different tripod sockets available for separate purchase.
Notably, the Sigma 300-600mm lens includes a drop-in filter holder compatible with standard 40.5mm filters. Additionally, Sigma has introduced a new drop-in circular polarizer and a variable ND filter that can be adjusted by approximately seven stops, both sold separately.
This lens features several customizable buttons and switches, including four AFL button locations, a focus mode switch, a focus limiter switch, and an OS mode switch (Mode 1 or Mode 2), along with a custom mode switch. The L-Mount variant is also compatible with Sigma’s teleconverters for autofocus shooting extending to a maximum focal length of 1,200mm.
