The Miami Dolphins are bidding farewell to Raheem Mostert. According to a tweet from the running back’s agent on Twitter, Mostert “will be playing elsewhere next season” while expressing gratitude to the organization for the opportunity to chase a championship with a different team. The Dolphins officially announced this decision on Friday, along with the releases of tight end Durham Smythe and cornerback Kendall Fuller.
As Mostert approaches his 33rd birthday in April, he comes off a season where his contributions were notably diminished, which mirrored his performance.
During the 2022 season, Mostert averaged 4.9 yards per carry while sharing the workload with Chase Edmonds and later Jeff Wilson. He finished the year with 891 rushing yards and three touchdowns. However, 2023 marked a career high for Mostert, achieving personal bests in carries (209), total yards (1,012), and touchdowns, while leading the league with 18 rushing touchdowns in tandem with De’Von Achane.
Last season, though, Mostert’s performance dipped as he averaged only 3.3 yards per carry with just 85 rushing attempts, significantly overshadowed by Achane. With the Dolphins selecting Jaylen Wright in the 2024 draft, it was anticipated that Mostert’s role would diminish even further, prompting his opportunity to seek a position in another team’s running back rotation.
Despite his remarkable speed, Mostert has struggled to consistently handle a heavy workload throughout his career, compounded by injuries. The market for running backs aged 33 tends to be quite limited, and especially so for someone coming off a less productive season after years of robust performance.
Nevertheless, teams are often in the market for running back support, and a seasoned veteran like Mostert should find a spot on another roster, possibly signing a one-year deal. If he can rediscover his prior form, he may secure a larger role than anticipated.
