During Week 15 of the NFL season, De’Vondre Campbell, a linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, made headlines when he unexpectedly walked off the sideline and refused to participate in the game, leading to his suspension for the remainder of the season. It wasn’t until Friday that Campbell took to social media to express his feelings, albeit without clarifying his reasons for leaving the team. His outburst suggested he might be content with stepping away from professional football after a successful nine-season career, during which he earned approximately $40 million.

“I’m not addressing anything. I’m wealthy and never have to work again. I made that clear to Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch when they FaceTimed me, asking me to join them shortly after Green Bay released me,” Campbell shared in his post.

Last season, Campbell served as a starter for the 49ers until Dre Greenlaw returned from an Achilles injury, taking over his position. This change seemingly triggered Campbell’s decision to step away from the game, choosing to do so in the midst of a match.

While Campbell’s unexpected behavior may have burned bridges with potential NFL teams for the future, if he has managed his $40 million wisely, he might indeed never need to consider another job again.
