The Houston Texans welcomed Nick Caley as their new offensive coordinator on Thursday, with head coach DeMeco Ryans expressing confidence that Caley can help the team rise to the next level.
Under Ryans’ leadership, the Texans have secured consecutive division titles and wild-card victories at home. However, their playoff journey has halted in the divisional round, where they’ve faced defeats against the Ravens and Chiefs, having been outscored 57-24 over the past two seasons.
“We’ve enjoyed significant success in these initial years,” Ryans noted, as reported by DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN. “However, I believe there’s a higher level we can achieve. My mission is to elevate this organization, and I’m confident that bringing Nick on board will facilitate that journey.”
Caley remarked on Thursday that quarterback C.J. Stroud possesses a remarkable “it” factor.
After earning the Offensive Rookie of the Year title in 2023, Stroud’s performance dipped in his second season, leading to the departure of Bobby Slowik as offensive coordinator.
Ryans had previously recruited Slowik to join him in Houston from San Francisco. “Letting go of Bobby was a tough decision,” Ryans admitted. “As you know, Bobby is a close friend of mine. He played a pivotal role in my coaching journey; we both started as quality control coaches in San Francisco. Our bond goes back a long way, and I have nothing but respect and appreciation for what he has accomplished.”
