Delta Air Lines has announced that passengers involved in the recent incident of a Toronto-bound flight that crash-landed and overturned will receive $30,000 each.
Details on how passengers can claim their compensation have yet to be revealed. However, should all 76 passengers accept this offer, Delta will be looking at a total payout of approximately $2.3 million.
According to a Delta spokesperson, representatives from the Delta Care Team have assured customers that this offer “comes with no strings attached and does not compromise their rights.”
Delta Flight 4819 was en route to Toronto Pearson International Airport from Minneapolis when it caught fire upon landing and overturned on the runway at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Monday.
The CRJ-900 aircraft was carrying a total of 76 passengers and four crew members, many of whom were left dangling in their seatbelts as the smoking plane came to a standstill.
Although there were no fatalities, 21 individuals sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals for care. Toronto Pearson’s President and CEO, Deborah Flint, confirmed that none of the injuries were life-threatening.
By Wednesday morning, Delta reported that all but one of the injured passengers had been discharged from the hospital. Delta confirmed.
Flint noted that weather conditions at Toronto Pearson International Airport were clear on Monday, despite wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph during the incident. Though two storms had previously dropped nearly 2 feet of snow around the airport, radar indicated no snow at the time of the accident.
Flint cautioned against speculation regarding the event’s circumstances and refrained from commenting on the state of the runway.
The precise cause of the crash is still undetermined. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is conducting an investigation, with support from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, as officials have reported.
