PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos – Authorities reported that a tourist sustained injuries following a shark incident while attempting to take a selfie with the formidable predator, according to Caribbean officials.
The incident occurred last Friday in the waters adjacent to Blue Hills, Providenciales, as reported by the Turks and Caicos Islands government.
The victim was promptly taken to a nearby medical facility for stabilization before being airlifted off the island for further care, as noted by the Department of Environment & Coastal Resources (DECR).

The DECR’s investigation discovered that the tourist had waded into shallow waters and tried to “interact” with the roughly 6-foot shark, species yet to be confirmed, for a photograph.
In the aftermath of the attack, authorities issued a beach closure as a safety measure. The affected area was reopened on Sunday after it was confirmed that the shark had departed to deeper waters.
Local offices emphasized the importance of respecting marine wildlife and following safety protocols.
“Always swim in designated zones, steer clear of murky waters, avoid swimming alone, and never attempt to feed ocean creatures,” the DECR advised.
