As the effects of Trump’s tariffs continue to shape international relations, Chantal Kreviazuk recently made headlines during the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off against the United States.

The celebrated singer of Get to You performed the Canadian national anthem, “O Canada,” at Thursday’s game held at TD Garden in Boston. Her rendition drew jeers from the crowd as she creatively altered the lyrics to make a statement against the rival team.

Rather than singing “true patriot love in all of us command,” Kreviazuk opted for the lyric “that only us command,” even sharing a photo on her Instagram Story that featured the phrase written on her palm.

In recent NHL and NBA events, audiences of Canadian origin have booed “The Star-Spangled Banner” following U.S. President Donald Trump‘s introduction of 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, alongside a 10% tariff on goods from China. Reactions in Canada included retaliatory measures, while Mexico warned of potential “tariff and non-tariff measures.”

At typical NHL and NBA games featuring teams from both nations, the performance of both national anthems usually precedes gameplay. However, during “The Star-Spangled Banner” at NHL matches in cities such as Ottawa, Vancouver, and Calgary, Canadian spectators have been known to boo loudly, at times drowning out the anthem altogether. Although the anthem was not prominently showcased in televised coverage, attendees quickly began sharing videos of the incidents on social media.

A similar scene unfolded in Toronto, where the Raptors, Canada’s sole NBA team, were scheduled to face off against the L.A. Clippers.
