AirPods Pro 2 have quickly become one of my favorite Apple gadgets since their release. They signify a crucial shift in Apple’s product strategy that is unlikely to be reversed. Here’s why they stand out.
Improvements in AirPods Pro 2 Since Launch
Reflecting on the launch of AirPods Pro 2 in 2022, I chuckle at my initial hesitation to purchase them.
I was satisfied with my first-generation AirPods Pro. However, after learning about the enhancements in version 2—particularly the upgraded noise cancellation—I couldn’t resist.
Since then, Apple has made incredible strides with AirPods Pro 2, continuously introducing updates that make them feel almost like a next-generation product.

Since the debut of AirPods Pro 2, Apple has incorporated several new features and improvements:
- Adaptive Audio: Combines noise cancellation and transparency into one cohesive mode
- Conversation Awareness: Facilitates smooth real-world interactions without needing to remove an AirPod
- Automatic Switching: This enhanced feature now operates seamlessly (at least for me)
- Voice Isolation: Enhances phone calls even in noisy environments
- Siri Interactions: Supports nonverbal responses like nodding and shaking heads
- Personalized Spatial Audio: Enhanced further in iOS 18
- Hearing Protection: A proactive tool for preventing hearing loss
- Hearing Test: A convenient at-home hearing assessment
- Hearing Aid: A potentially life-changing health feature
These updates complement the capabilities introduced at the launch of AirPods Pro 2, enhancing their overall functionality.
This impressive list highlights an important expectation moving forward.
Users are now likely to anticipate ongoing significant feature upgrades across all AirPods models in the future.
AirPods Pro 2 Establish a New Standard for Updates

Not too long ago, purchasing headphones or earphones meant being stuck with a fixed set of features.
Even the earlier models of AirPods had some firmware updates, but their core functions remained largely unchanged.
However, AirPods Pro 2 have redefined expectations. They mark a turning point in how Apple approaches AirPods development—one that is irreversible.
As we look forward to the launch of AirPods Pro 3 later this year, I expect to see ongoing enhancements that expand their feature set significantly, similar to what we’ve seen with AirPods Pro 2.
Anything less than exciting new features each year will surely disappoint.
The remarkable upgrades presented by AirPods Pro 2 partly explain why the ‘new’ AirPods Max released last fall felt underwhelming. The original version of AirPods Max lacked the continuous feature expansions found in AirPods Pro 2. With minimal changes like just adding USB-C support, the updated AirPods Max may suffer the same fate.
With AirPods Pro 2’s ongoing improvements, Apple has seemingly created a challenge for itself. Users are increasingly expecting the same level of innovation across all AirPods products.
AirPods Evolve into Standalone Devices

It’s commonplace for Apple’s other devices like iPhones, iPads, Macs, Vision Pro, Apple Watches, and Apple TV 4K to receive new features through annual software updates. Occasionally, even the HomePod sees such upgrades.
However, for many years, headphones—including AirPods—were treated differently, often as mere accessories.
That era has passed. AirPods Pro 2 have proven that they are substantial devices deserving of the same continual improvements that other Apple products receive. It’s an exciting shift, one that I hope Apple continues to embrace.
You can find the AirPods Pro 2 currently on Amazon for $169, a significant reduction from the regular price of $249.
