On Friday, Apple introduced the iOS 18.4 beta, featuring an array of exciting new functionalities. Among these enhancements are Priority Notifications powered by Apple Intelligence, a dedicated Food section in the Apple News app, and additional updates. A notable yet subtle change relates to CarPlay, especially for vehicles equipped with larger screens.
As observed by Jace on Threads, the latest iOS 18.4 allows CarPlay to showcase a third row of application icons, expanding from the previous two. This adjustment enables CarPlay to better utilize larger in-car displays.
It’s important to note that this feature is not universally available across all vehicles. The third row of icons will only appear on compatible large displays, and the exact requirements are not explicitly defined. For instance, MacRumors highlights that this feature is available on the Toyota Tundra, which can be outfitted with a display measuring up to 14 inches.

This development is a significant improvement. With car manufacturers continually integrating larger screens, CarPlay has struggled to keep pace, and many users are still awaiting the debut of CarPlay 2, which is yet to be announced.
This update serves as an effective interim solution for users with larger displays, enhancing overall usability and reducing the need to navigate through multiple home screen pages.
