SAN FRANCISCO — On Tuesday, Apple officially updated its maps to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, following a directive from President Donald Trump that was sanctioned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System.

This change mirrors a recent announcement by Google, which proclaimed last month that it would implement the new name contingent upon the official listing update. In a blog post this Sunday, Google confirmed that it has begun rolling out the name modification. The tech giant noted that while users in the U.S. will see Gulf of America, those in Mexico will continue to view Gulf of Mexico, with both names appearing to users from other regions.

After taking office, Trump mandated the renaming of the body of water bordered by the southern U.S., Mexico, and Cuba.

The U.S. Geographic Names Information System officially changed the name late Sunday. Additionally, Microsoft has updated its Bing maps to reflect this new designation.

The Associated Press, a global news organization serving a diverse audience, will continue to use the term Gulf of Mexico, a name it has recognized for over 400 years, while also acknowledging the alternative name Gulf of America.
