According to recent reports, Apple has decided to postpone the launch of its next-generation, budget-friendly iPhone SE until next week.

Initially, the tech giant intended to reveal the device this week through its website rather than hosting a traditional press event, which is typically reserved for more significant product announcements. However, as reported by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the schedule has shifted slightly. He mentioned that there might still be a minor announcement occurring this week.

In addition, Apple is preparing to announce the Apple Vision Pro and a new MacBook Air featuring the M4 chip in the coming weeks.

Apple has yet to respond to requests for further information.

The introduction of an updated SE model aligns with Apple’s strategy to attract new users, especially those who do not currently own an iPhone.

This upcoming update signifies a notable change for Apple’s entry-level iPhone, which was originally launched in 2016. The new version, reportedly known as V59, is expected to feature Apple’s first proprietary cellular modem, replacing Qualcomm’s technology, and will integrate Face ID for the first time—phasing out the traditional home button, according to Bloomberg. It’s anticipated to be powered by Apple’s A18 chip, similar to the one in the iPhone 16, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the company’s latest AI software, Apple Intelligence.

This update comes as Apple recently reported a slight 1% decrease in iPhone sales during the holiday period, falling short of expectations. The introduction of a more advanced yet affordable iPhone SE could position Apple competitively in critical markets like China and India, where affordable smartphones with premium features are becoming increasingly popular.

The current iPhone SE has a starting price of $429 in the US, significantly lower than the $799 starting price for the iPhone 16.
