According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is currently considering the introduction of search advertisements within the Apple Maps application.
Previously, in 2022, Gurman revealed that efforts were already in motion to incorporate advertisements into the Apple Maps platform. However, Apple decided against pursuing this direction at that time. Now, he notes that Apple is once again evaluating this concept.
At this stage, he clarified that Apple has not yet initiated any engineering tasks, suggesting that the integration of ads into the Apple Maps app may still take some time.
Unlike conventional banner advertisements seen on websites, the ads in the Apple Maps app would function as sponsored search results. For instance, a fast-food restaurant could pay Apple to ensure their listing ranks prominently when users search for keywords like “burgers” or “fries.” Several similar applications, such as Google Maps, Waze, and Yelp, already utilize search advertising.
Apple currently offers search ads in the App Store, enabling developers to promote their apps to users searching for relevant terms.
The introduction of advertisements within Apple Maps would likely contribute to an increase in Apple’s service revenue.
