New York’s iconic sports broadcaster has passed away.

Al Trautwig, a familiar face on MSG Network, was confirmed deceased by his former colleague, Alan Hahn, via a social media post on Monday. His son, Alex, shared with the Associated Press that Trautwig died at his Long Island home on Sunday due to cancer complications.

He was 68 years old.

A native of Long Island, Trautwig became a cherished presence in the homes of New York sports enthusiasts throughout his lengthy broadcasting career, covering major events including the Yankees, Knicks, Rangers, the New York City Marathon, and even the Olympics.

Additionally, Trautwig made a memorable cameo in the beloved Disney movie “Cool Runnings,” which chronicled the Jamaican national bobsleigh team’s first Olympic appearance.

“He was more than just a friend; he was a mentor and teacher. Personally, he was one of my biggest supporters as I embarked on my career,” Hahn expressed in a heartfelt tribute on X.

Trautwig’s last appearance on air was four years ago when MSG Network chose not to renew his contract in 2021.

In a statement to The Post, MSG Networks expressed their sorrow over Trautwig’s passing, stating, “Al was a cornerstone of MSG Networks’ coverage of the Knicks, Rangers, and Yankees for over 30 years, and his passion for the teams he reported on was unmistakable. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the history of New York sports broadcasting. Our thoughts and prayers are with Al’s loved ones.”

Just one day before the interview was published, Trautwig, who celebrated his 68th birthday, mentioned that he had been “cleared, and now it is just a matter of getting better.”

After his tenure at the network, Trautwig dedicated time to teaching at Adelphi University in Long Island.

He received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and had the honor of being the commencement speaker at his alma mater in 2017.

Throughout his illustrious career, Trautwig earned four National Emmy Awards, 28 New York Emmy Awards, and was named New York State Sportscaster of the Year.

His extensive coverage included 16 Olympic Games for networks like NBC, ABC, and CBS, and he began his journey by calling games for the New York Apollo soccer team in 1978 at Adelphi’s student-run radio station, WBAU, before transitioning to WMCA radio after graduation.

Trautwig joined MSG Networks in 1989.

“I have had the privilege to work alongside incredible broadcasters, but none were quite like Al Trautwig,” Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay wrote on social media in remembrance. “He was truly made for the airwaves—smooth and composed. Al expertly guided me through the growing pains of television. His teachings were priceless. For so many years, he was a significant part of New York sports culture on MSG. He will be deeply missed—gone too soon. Rest in peace, my friend.”

Howie Rose, a Mets broadcaster and former voice of the Islanders, referred to Trautwig as “the best to ever do it,” while Jets broadcaster Bob Wischusen declared him an “NYC media legend.”

“When Al’s voice was heard starting a pregame show, he made local broadcasts feel monumental. He was also one of the kindest individuals you could meet,” Wischusen remarked in his tribute.

“He was the quintessential host of MSG Network,” said NBC New York’s lead sports anchor Bruce Beck. “He needed just a clipboard and a few notes—and then he’d shine. Among spontaneous speakers, he was unparalleled.”

Before stepping into the broadcasting spotlight, Trautwig was deeply involved in sports from an early age, serving as a stickboy for the Islanders in their formative years and as a ballboy for the Nets during their time in the ABA.
