On Thursday, President Trump, alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the Oval Office, expressed strong confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s integrity regarding any potential peace agreement to conclude the ongoing war in Ukraine. “I believe he will keep his promises,” Trump stated, reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Putin.
During the discussion, Trump brought up past investigations related to Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections, suggesting that these experiences had inadvertently strengthened the bond between the two leaders. “We dealt with the Russian hoax together,” he remarked, noting the challenges they faced.
In stark contrast, Prime Minister Starmer’s views on Russia diverged significantly from Trump’s. He visited Washington with a constructive message: the UK is prepared to deploy troops to Ukraine for peacekeeping once the conflict concludes.
When asked about the implications of sending British forces to Ukraine, particularly if Russia were to abandon a peace deal and resume hostilities, Trump was queried about whether the United States would assist the UK in such a scenario.
Starmer’s visit follows previous meetings with various European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron earlier in the week, all aiming to engage Trump on finding a diplomatic solution to the war initiated by Russia in Ukraine.
